Welcome to the Social and Urban Analytics Lab, based at the School of Business, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and led by Kwan Hui Lim.

The lab develops AI-driven decision systems for social good in complex social and urban environments. It began with a simple question: how to recommend a sequence of places to a visitor with limited time, particular interests, and a city that imposes opening hours, travel times and crowds. That question produced the PersTour and GroupTourRec datasets and a line of itinerary and point-of-interest recommendation methods, alongside work on social-media geolocation, urban sensing and crisis informatics.

Our current work is organised around three themes. Each concerns sequential decisions that involve people, made under real operational constraints, where the system must be able to state what it did and for whom it worked.

Research

  • AI for education and training
AI that supports the relationships through which people learn, from the classroom to transfer into the workplace.
  • Fairness and privacy of AI across domains
Audits with statistical guarantees, and guardrails at the boundary of a system, built to be reused across domains and problems.
  • Agentic planning, scheduling and recommendation
Conversational agents paired with solvers that enforce the rules and repair infeasible plans, so that no plan reaches a person unverified.

We work with education partners, agencies and platforms that need auditable guardrails, and operators with rosters and plans to repair. Students contribute to part of one system or measure one aspect of its use. For more details, see our publications or write to khlim (at) suss.edu.sg.
